Biography

I was born in New Orleans and spent most of my early life in central Louisiana under the quiet and careful guidance of the nuns at Sacred Heart Grammar School in Pineville. It was terrifying. To this day, I will not allow my wife to wear a black and white dress. I then attended Holy Savior Menard Central High School (seriously, that’s the name) where I learned to fear men with the honorific “Coach.” Having learned that lesson and survived to graduation, I went to LSU in Baton Rouge and managed to graduate with a BS in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry in just five and half short years. It was one of the worst mistakes of my life. Not the college or the degree—the graduating from college. I had no idea how much fun I was having until I was no longer having so much fun. If I had known what I know now, I would still be attending the university, having amassed roughly 10,000 undergraduate hours and several million dollars in student loan debt.

After graduation I began living the American Dream: Got married a few times, got divorced a few times minus one, got several jobs, quit several jobs and despite all that, found that I didn’t have quite enough stress in my life, so I started my own business. And that, as we like to say in the industrial detergent business, corrected my pathetically anemic stress levels.

I now live in Hernando MS, a small town just 20 miles south of Memphis. In spite of my best efforts at sabotage, my business in Memphis is still thriving, and, at the age of 72, I still go to work every day to shake my fist and yell at the workers. They smile and say, “Yes sir, Mr. Gregg,” and then completely ignore whatever I said. We have a system, and it’s working.

I have a small house with a large greenhouse on several acres way back in the woods where I live with my wife, two cats, not nearly enough dogs, twelve chickens, an unknown number of mice (the cats are lazy and arrogant) and a few tropical fish. The fish are almost no trouble at all, and the dogs occasionally pay attention to me. It's a life.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. May 2, 2025 — Local author and small business owner Gregg Overman will release his eagerly awaited third science fiction novel, Blue Thunder: Across the Shattered Stars, the latest installment in his Blue Universe series, on May 2.

Known for blending hard science fiction with deep emotional storytelling, Overman has drawn comparisons to novelists Andy Weir and John Scalzi. He also joins a long list of authors to spotlight Memphis as a home for award-winning fiction.

Overman, who runs a Memphis-based business and lives in North Mississippi, drew inspiration for Blue Thunder from a lifelong love of science fiction and a background in science. A graduate of Louisiana State University with a degree in zoology and decades of experience as a chemist, Overman infuses his writing with both scientific depth and vivid imagination. “I like big, grand stories that weave together characters, science, and meaning.”

Set hundreds of years after his previous books, Blue Thunder follows Martian siblings Gracely and Jered as they struggle to stop an interplanetary war. Separated as children, one raised on Earth and one on the distant world of Harmony, they must overcome their differences and join forces in a universe shaped by mysterious alien forces, wormholes, political intrigue, and shifting realities.

The book has already garnered literary praise. Kirkus Reviews called it a “heartening story of found families, full of lovable characters that anchor the political elements,” and Clarion Reviews gave it four stars, noting its inventive plot and charming touches.

What sets Overman’s work apart in a genre often dominated by technology and spectacle is his commitment to character. His writing consistently provides depth and realism to a diverse group of personalities – humans and aliens alike. “I want readers to see them not as characters but as people,” he explains. “Gracely, Jered, Robbi, Torch—they all came to life for me, and I hope they will for readers, too.”

Although Blue Thunder is the third book in a series, it can be read as a standalone novel.

The book is available on Amazon in both print and digital formats. Kindle Unlimited subscribers can access the ebook at no cost beginning on May 2. Overman is currently scheduling local book signings and readings to further promote the launch of Blue Thunder to long-time fans and new readers.

I hope you enjoyed Books one and two of the Blue Sun Series and would love to hear from you. I’m working hard on # 3 and hope to have it done by the end of the year. Thank you to all who have read them, and please continue to buy my books so I can get more dogs. (If that doesn't make sense to you, read the bio.)

Meanwhile, independent authors flourish or perish on the strength and number of their reviews. Please leave a review for one or both books if you have that time.

Thanks,

Gregg
